In physics, power (symbol: P) is the rate at which work is performed or energy is transmitted, or the amount of energy required or expended for a given unit of time. As a rate of change of work done or the energy of a subsystem, power is:

Power is the concept behind every punch, kick, knee and elbow in muay ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Thai. Simply put the work you are doing is your technique and the time is how long it takes for you to execute it.

This is physics and if human beings were machines then this would be true.

Only in my dreams!!!! There is another science out there that accounts for the variables of movement and that is Kinesiology. In kinesiology takes into account the following.



Meaning the force you generate on any motion over any given distance and the amount of time it takes you to get there will determine your Power.

But How do you generate and transfer force through a movement?

Ground reaction force: The force that is generated through the lower body as the foot pushes off the floor.

In a kick, it all starts with the push off the floor. The force from that push travels towards your center of gravity (different for everybody). The forward propulsion of the kick is determined by the angle that the foot left the floor. The wider the angle of your kick from your center, the more diffuse the force of the forward propulsion. The horizontal component is then influenced by the friction and transfer of force produced by the standing leg. Friction is created as you pivot your foot on the standing leg. The pivot of the standing leg’s foot aides the shoulders and the hip to turn over and carry the horizontal force forward into the target.

To sum up power off a kick, you need to take you’re the mass of your leg and effectively and efficiently bring that force up and over to finish your movement in as little time as possible.

Limiting factors to producing a kick at max power:

  1. Poor technique. In other words, the angle of your stance is too wide, the pivot of your standing foot is sub-par and the transfer of force up the body is diffused due to poor segmental rotation of the hips, shoulders and leg.
  2. The time taken to execute the kick is too long to transfer power from the floor to the target.
  3. The target moves. This creates more time form floor to objective and therefore decreases power into the target.

What this means for the high kick is that you must execute all the key points listed above over a greater distance. To compensate for the distance you must move faster, transfer force through ideal segmental rotation AND have the flexibility to reach your intended target .

The Muay Thai Minute: Part 1

In the first installment of "The Muay Thai Minute" we will be discussing the personal path, setting and achieving goals, and using muay Thai as a vehicle to push yourself forward.

First, I want to start off by saying that whether we realize or not, we are all on a path of self-discovery and personal growth. No matter your religion, background, race, gender, or age we are all in some way shaping our own lives and those around us through the choices we make, people we surround ourselves with, and paths we choose to walk. Put yourself in positive places with positive faces and get positive results. Put yourself in negative places with negative faces and, you guessed it, you get negative results. Like attracts like.

If you already found yourself a good muay Thai gym then your already on your way or have been for some time now. Next time you are at your gym I want you to look around, take a good look at the people around you. Whether they be fellow teammates, fighters, or trainers, they all have one thing in common. Setting and achieving goals. It could be for fitness or fighting, to master your life or help someone master theirs. No matter what your goal may be keep in mind not only to train muay Thai but be muay Thai, don't just do the technique, become the technique. Take your training to a higher ground each day. Add 10 more sit-ups, run another half mile, do 5 extra pull-ups.

Life should be about mastering your self, your body, and your mind. Use Thai boxing as the vehicle to push yourself closer to who you envision yourself as. What you accomplish inside the gym will eventually carry itself over to other parts of your life. Dream big. Live big.
