They both feel and experience fear. It’s what a person does with that fear that makes him either the coward or the hero. He said to use that fear to fuel my fight.<br /><br />So what exactly is fear and how do we channel it to our advantage? Fear, in it’s most literal sense can best be described as an emotional response to tangible and realistic dangers. Once settled in, fear can also be the source of the “flight or fight” response one gets right before immediate danger.<br /><br />Now how you choose to use fear to your advantage is a matter of personal preference. No two men or women react the same. You may embrace the feeling of fear and use it to make you sharper in the ring. The fear of losing may cause you to push harder to win. The fear of getting hurt may cause you to protect yourself more carefully. On the other hand, you may fear the crowd, or your opponent, two things that may lead to doubt and weaken performance. <br /><br />In order to use fear to your advantage, you need not dwell on the emotion itself. For the more you feed into the emotion the more it will overcome you. Instead, accept what you feel, recognize it, and then let it go. Your body will handle the rest. Remember, fear is friend. The force from that push travels towards your center of gravity (different for everybody). The wider the angle of your kick from your center, <span style=""> </span>the more diffuse the force of the forward propulsion. The horizontal component is then influenced by the friction and transfer of force produced by the standing leg. Friction is created as you pivot your foot on the standing leg. No matter your religion, background, race, gender, or age we are all in some way shaping our own lives and those around us through the choices we make, people we surround ourselves with, and paths we choose to walk. Put yourself in positive places with positive faces and get positive results. Put yourself in negative places with negative faces and, you guessed it, you get negative results. Like attracts like.<br /><br />If you already found yourself a good muay Thai gym then your already on your way or have been for some time now. Next time you are at your gym I want you to look around, take a good look at the people around you. Whether they be fellow teammates, fighters, or trainers, they all have one thing in common. Setting and achieving goals. It could be for fitness or fighting, to master your life or help someone master theirs. No matter what your goal may be keep in mind not only to <span style="font-style: italic;">train</span> muay Thai but <span style="font-style: italic;">be</span> muay Thai, don't just do the technique, become the technique. Take your training to a higher ground each day. Add 10 more sit-ups, run another half mile, do 5 extra pull-ups.<br /><br />Life should be about mastering your self, your body, and your mind. Use Thai boxing as the vehicle to push yourself closer to who you envision yourself as. What you accomplish inside the gym will eventually carry itself over to other parts of your life. Dream big. I will check in again during my layover in Hong Kong. Thank you everyone for being a part of this. Enjoy.<br /><br /> <br /><br />When I first arrived the voices and faces all looked the same. The language alien. But as time went on I had began getting to know the fighters and the trainers on a personal level. I am not only leaving behind a gym that I had been training at but also the new friends I have made. From my pad holder to the pancake man and from the fruit lady to the man at the pad thai stand. I am leaving it all behind. <br /><br />I originally posted my first blog asking what I would be training. Was it my body? My mind? All those things I had originally listed. It was all there, and more. I had been training myself not only to learn how to kick faster or stronger, but I was learning how to grow as a person and bend without breaking, like bamboo in strong winds. I wasn't only training to throw vicious elbows, but was also training to think quick and respond in the heat of the moment. <br /><br />There were times when I had to dig deep. I wasn't only visiting a new land here in Thailand, but I was also visiting a new land within myself. I've seen the Temples of Thailand, and in return seen the Temples within me. It has been a journey I will never forget. Some people back home told me before I left that the flight there wouldn't be so bad because I have it all to look forward to. And that the flight home would be the killer because there would be no reward. But I find this untrue. I realize after being here that I have it all back home. I have everything to look forward to and everything that I could ever need to live my life. I feel somewhat of a simpler man nowadays. I ate at places that I wouldn't dare to eat at if I had seen them back home. I've ate things that I wouldn't even think to touch as well. I became use to the ants in the white rice and on the plates and cups. I remember when I first arrived I would pick the ants off the spoon before scooping into the rice. The other farang who have been there a while would say "stop being a lady boy". After 2 weeks I was saying the same to the new guys coming in.<br /><br />There were also times when I had been training so hard for days on end that I would often forget if it was the morning or afternoon session. They would sometimes feel like they merged right into each other with no rest. I've worked through pulled back muscles, ran for countless miles with swollen feet, destroyed the tendons in my knuckles, and did thousands of sit-ups. Some people go to an island or a cruise for there vacation, but I chose this. Anything but. I've come to realize what the human body is capable of doing and how it adjusts so quickly. I feel like a fine-tuned machine.<br /><br />When I first arrived the Thai's weren't impressed by my presence. We would walk right by each other without saying a word. But after a while we had grown like family. We would teach each other bad words in our respective languages during situps. Often times I would be out at the store far away from Talingchan and I would run into a couple fighters. When we seen each other we would start going crazy and laughing and share a taxi back to the gym. We couldn't communicate through language, but I learned a smile breaks all barriers. There wasn't much to do when not training so we would hang out at the seven(7-11). We would try to talk with the girls that worked there in our best Thai and thier best English. I had bought a book on Thai phrases and we would eat pad Thai outside and laugh back and forth for hours. I even went out to the movies once with Ning. Phil had once said, if shes a good Thai girl, she'll make you wait 2 months just for a kiss. Turned out she was a good girl. She requested to come with me to the airport and see me off. I feel like I'm leaving home....again.<br /><br />I've had close to 650 views at my blogs over the last few weeks. I could have never imagined it would be like this, the feedback was great. I learned I have a decent talent for writting. Maybe something I will pursue in the future. I often thought over the last couple of days what I would write for my last blog, my last hu-rah, but I don't like to force or premeditate anything. So I just sit here now, typing away whatever comes to mind. I'm almost at a loss for words. Looking back it has came and gone so quick. And this is all it, right here, right now. Everything that I had learned about Muay Thai, Life, and Myself. Life is about the journey and not the destination. Thailand was not my destination, neither will be New York. They are all part of the journey, this journey called life. Everything ties together in some way, shape, or form. It's funny, because just today I had wondered why it is I love this culture so much. What was it that drew me to this sport and wanting to learn more of the people and the land. And it had hit me. I remember when I was about 6 or 7 my grandfather would take me to the asain store all the time. And everything there seemed to fascinate me. The artwork, the dragons, the whole culture. So I wondered if it was that, mixed with the fact that both my grandfather and father were boxers, that had meshed and molded my love for this here. <br /><br />At noon today I packed my bags and took one more look around the room. I sat down on the bed one last time and just happen to look up at the plywood holding up the top bunk. On it, someone had wrote "Live Your Dreams", and underneath it was a list of names. Look at this year's ambassadors to pro-baseball, track and American football. Baseball has been plagued with accusations and admissions of steroid abuse. Marion Jones had her Olympic medals stripped from her, and Michael Vic brought new respect for pro-football players by operating his own dog-fighting ring. High profile incidents affect public opinion of a sport, but I think that every-day occurrences at the most amateur level can affect perception of the culture of sport.<br /><br />Lost yet? Well, it makes me think of Muay Thai and other fighting arts. Over the years, I have come into contact mostly with athletes from boxing, Tae Kwon Do, and MMA backgrounds. Because I don't have much experience outside of my encounters at the gym, I have formed certain perceptions about the cultures of these sports. Many boxers don't like to kick. The ones I have spoken to outside the gym have no respect for kicking. I believe foot fairy is a commonly used term amongst those boxing aficionados I have met. Tae Kwon Do and other martial arts are by far the most open minded people I have met at the gym. They are respectful, easy to train, and well-mannered. Sorry to everyone else, including Muay Thai, but the ambassadors to the martial arts had the most esteem in my book, until yesterday.<br /><br />One bad ambassador from Wing-Chun was so obnoxious to me yesterday that I can't help but wonder if the philosophy of the sport is like that. This guy was so condescending and rude that I was left thinking that the school of Wing-Chun is pretty stuck-up. Is it right for me to think like that? No. But do I? Yes. It's human nature, and so I began to worry about my Muay Thai ambassadors out there. I know what our major short coming is: VANITY. We like to look good. We (generally) have nice physiques, and we worry about coordinating our gear. (LOL YOU KNOW IT S TRUE ) The heart of a muay Thai fighter though, is supposed to be humble. Point being, we all need to make sure that we represent correctly.<br /><br />There are a lot of us who practice Muay Thai but, then again, we are a small community. We have to put our best foot forward. Especially here in USA, there is a negative perception about out sport. People think its dirty fighting. They think it's dangerous, savage and un-marketable. We couldn't even get a network to pick up The Contender Asia. These amulets are a bit more personal to the fighter than the Mongkon. He can incorporate anything from a strand of his mothers hair to a thread of clothing from a loved one. Any such personal items placed under or within the Pra Jiad is believed to raise the confidence level of the fighter. Before you leave it is best to have taken private sessions with a trainer. Group class is not as intense as a one-on-one session with a Thai trainer. If you have never prepared for a fight, this is the next best thing. Work the costs into your travel budget and start about 6-8 weeks before you leave.<br /><br />2. Start running now. Run before class and sometimes run before and after class. You have to know what it is like to run and train right away. Running at 6am and training at 7pm will do you no good. You have to know what its like to train tired. Try to get up to 3 miles before leaving. (p.s. the more miles you run, the more prepared you'll be).<br /><br />3. Contact the camp before you show up. You need to know if there are rooms available and how much they are going to charge you in advance. Don't show up and then negotiate. Nowadays camps are charging about 150-200 per week for training, food, and accommodation. There are huge differences in the quality of accommodations, so ask for PICS.<br /><br />4. I will not tell you the name of the camp I went to unless I know you can represent. But most camps have website’s and the staff at your gym may be able to help steer you in the best direction.<br /><br />5. Learn a little Thai. Get a phrase book and carry it with you all the time Don't be a typical American and speak English only. Knowing even a little bit of Thai will make people willing to work with you. Mention Muay Thai to the taxi driver and he will be you're new best friend.<br /><br />6. Bring cash. Credit cards are not accepted at places like Lumpani or most vendors. Try to figure out ow much you'll need and exchange most of it at the airport. Outside of an ATM machine the airport gives you the best exchange rate. At the exchange booth in the airport, ask for 1000 baht in smaller 100 baht notes. The taxi driver will not break a 1000 for you.<br /><br />7. When you land at the airport in Thailand Suwanabun? (spelling) go up one level and get a taxi from the departing ramp instead of the arrivals ramp. It will cut your cost in half. Have your destination written out in Thai. Don't take a limo Unless you’re a baller and don't care, you will be taking a very expensive ride. The taxi ride should cost you no more than $300 baht(about 10 dollars). Now if you are in a remote section of Bangkok, the fee will be more.<br /><br />8. If you are going to stay in a hotel don’t book online. They will charge you double the Thai rate. Better to research a hotel address near your camp and then stay there for the night. You can always go directly to the camp if you land at a civilized hour.<br /><br />9. As for training, take it slow. Don't try to achieve 85% of your max HR on your first run. Just observe the culture of the camp. You have been sitting in a plane for over 20 hours. If you try to push yourself, you will pull some muscles.<br /><br />10. After you ignore number 9 and pull all your muscles, go get a traditional Thai massage(the kind with your clothes on gentlemen). They saved my life in Thailand. It only cost $100 baht/hour in my camp's neighborhood. I got them for the first couple of days I was there and they fixed my pulled calf muscle and allowed me to move my arms again. It is totally worth the time and effort. Thai oil in Thailand only costs 60 baht. Get some and put it on before you train. It will help loosen muscles.<br /><br />11. Bring some books. There are few televisions in camps and we had animal planet in Thai almost all the time in the camp I went to.<br /><br />12. Start eating spicy food well before you leave. Make yourself like it or you will be in a bad situation when you get there. Even the water is spicy in Thailand. Ha Ha <br /><br />13. Eat at local food stands. As long as they cook it in front of you and its hot, you will be fine. Don't be put off by a little road stand and some plastic chairs. It’s the best food you will ever eat Don't eat at American food chains. Everyone I spoke with got very ill after eating at a Thai version of our American style fast food restaurants. Your in Thailand damn it If you don't see a Thai eating it, skip it <br /><br />14. If you get into digestive trouble, you can rely upon the rolls of toilet paper that I suggest you pack in your suitcase. Also, most antibiotics and stomach medicines are available over the counter. You will also be impressed to know that many educated Thai people, such as pharmacists, speak English. They will be happy to give you medicine for whatever ails you. When all else fails, you have that phrase book right?<br /><br />15. I don't know about nightlife over in Thailand. If you are there to train, you probably won't know much about it either. However, I always say that this is where tourists all over the world get into trouble. Don't get to drunk in another country. In fact, steer clear of large groups of foreigners where alcohol is involved. It's just good common street sense.<br /><br />16. Speaking of drinking, hydrate yourself constantly. Force water down your throat. We all got dehydrated very quickly in Thailand. You can't keep water in you when you are training 6 hours a day in 95-120 degree heat. Drink soda, juice, water, smoothie’s, just drink. That groggy drunk feeling you will get after a nap is not from exhaustion, its dehydration. I can't stress this enough. Take whatever you think you need in terms of water and triple it.<br /><br />17. If you are alone, take the BTS sky train. It is very clean, fast and will take you all across Bangkok very quickly. Otherwise, it costs just as much if not less to split the cost of a cab ride.<br /><br />18. Smile. Thais get stressed out with too many facial expressions. You can curse someone out, but don't stop smiling. Also, East coasters, watch the volume of your voice, that can stress people out as well. You are going to have to learn to be patient. Cutting to the chase is not polite. Remember you Pleases and Thank you's. Wai to your elders. Always eat something or drink something if offered. Thais are very gracious. If the people at the camp cook you something, smile and eat it. Don't ask what it is. In the past, the Monkgon was worn throughout the fight. If it fell off the fighters head during combat his opponent would allow him time to place it back on. Nowadays, the Mongkon is only worn during the Ram Muay and Wai Kru. It is said that if the Mongkon touches the ground or comes close to it, it can lose its magical powers. A fighter should never touch the Mongkon. Only his trainer can place or remove it form his head. In times past, anyone wanting to learn Muay Thai would first have to be evaluated by the trainer. If he was accepted as a student, he was given a Mongkon. In Thailand, if the tail of the Mongkon is facing upward, then the fighter is from southern Thailand. If facing downward, then the fighter is from northern Thailand.
